Let’s Get Scientific!
Today I want to offer you a new strategy for life. One that I think can make it much easier to step forward toward the life that you want, even when it’s scary. Are you ready?
It is to apply what we call the scientific method to what you are about to do. In simple terms, that means to try something, analyze results, make a conclusion, and then try again! This is a process that scientists and engineers have been using for centuries.
It’s a 100% fact-based strategy. They don’t feel terrible about themselves when something doesn’t work because the point is to rule out all that doesn’t, in the interest of (at some point) finding a viable answer to their problem.
What do most of us do? We take a step toward what we want, experience a challenge, or make a mistake, and shrink back to where we were (IF we even try at all). Why is that?
It is because we connect what is happening to our self-worth.
We make our mis-steps mean all kinds of things that it does not, because we believe the first words that pop into our head about ourselves. Which, science also tells us, is 80% negative for most human beings.
Success in anything is about some failure. It’s just part of the process, just as if we were mixing solutions in the lab. If we could look at pursuing our dreams in the same way, imagine how much further we would go!
And this applies whether the dream is a big accomplishment or something much simpler like working on a relationship, for instance, or starting to explore the possibility of a different job or seeking out some new friends.
Just take a step, go easy on yourself, and see what happens. If it doesn’t go well, think about the next best step and try that. When you remove judgement on yourself, and the worry about what someone else is thinking, it all becomes very neutral. It just IS, and we move forward.
I hope these words move you to action this week, no matter how small, toward something you want to make happen in your life.
